The Sidekick Celebrity: A Sweet Celebrity Romance (Crystal Springs Celebrities Book 2) Page 12
He guffawed. “The grocery store? That can’t possibly be–”
“It is,” she insisted. “When you were zooming along in that parking lot on the cart without a care in the world, that’s when I knew. I’d never laughed so hard, and in a grocery store no less. I knew time with you would never be boring.”
“Speaking of which,” he said, holding out his arm for her to take, “let’s go enjoy the rest of our vacation together.”
She slipped her arm through, ticking her head thoughtfully. “And once we’re back to the real world?”
Colt grinned. “We can make it up as we go.”
8 MONTHS LATER…
“I can’t believe you surprised me,” Jill said, practically skipping as she and Colt walked down to the greenway together. She squeezed his arm, staying close, and he smiled broadly at his girlfriend.
He’d arrived on her doorstep early that morning, just as she’d woken up on her day off. After breakfast together – and a lot of kissing – he’d gladly thrown on his running shoes to join her for a run.
They had their schedules down to a science now, seeing each other as often as possible. Between visits, they had their phones, and while he always missed her, the distance was hard, but manageable. They’d been to a dozen events together, where Jill charmed everyone she met. He’d never been happier, and she consumed nearly every waking thought.
Colt pulled her in long enough for a kiss on the cheek. “I had to – you’re throwing Rosie’s baby shower, after all, it’s the perfect excuse.”
“I’m so glad you could make it,” she said, grinning. The baby shower was tomorrow, but Rosie wasn’t due for another two months. “You can carry the cupcakes.”
Colt laughed. “I wouldn’t miss it. You should see your brother on set, he’s practically already handing out cigars.”
Jack was over the moon about becoming a father. He told nearly anyone who would listen, and he and Rosie had already asked Jill and Colt to be godparents. Jill’s parents were due to arrive that evening for the party, while Scarlett, in true fashion, would probably arrive just before it began.
“Did I tell you about Scarlett?” Jill asked, as though hearing his thoughts. “Her new movie is filming here next month! Everyone in town is so excited.”
“Scarlett is, too,” he said, having seen her recently for the most recent superhero franchise film. He grinned at Jill. “You think we can get her to move here, too?”
She clapped her hands together. “Then it’d be almost perfect!”
Jill had taken the job at Crystal Springs Hospital as an ER nurse, of course, and had excelled at it. She loved the fast pace, she admitted to Colt, and no two days were the same. Saving lives and helping people was its own reward, and Colt loved the constant glow of pride Jill carried in her career. She’d made several friends and adored living in Crystal Springs. Colt loved it here too, and in fact couldn’t wait to buy or build their own home together in their favorite neighborhood.
He, Jack, and Scarlett had just wrapped a crossover “General Justice” movie, where Colt’s character received the new title. The news had already gotten out, of course, but much to his relief, fans were elated at the twist. They couldn’t wait to see what he did next, and that included the industry, too; his agent was thrilled at the waves of producers and directors inquiring about him.
Jill’s place was only a block away from Jack and Rosie’s, and subsequently close to everything else they’d enjoyed while on vacation, including the greenway. Colt already couldn’t wait to take her to dinner, and meet a few of her nurse friends who she’d promised to introduce to him, as they were huge fans.
What Jill didn’t know was there would be one more surprise this weekend, after Rosie’s shower. Colt grinned to himself, thinking about the sparkling diamond ring back in Jill’s room, hidden in his travel bag. Rosie and Scarlett had both been in on it, making sure he picked the perfect fit for her.
Colt had taken Jack out to dinner last month to discuss his intentions, following up with a phone call to Jill’s father. Both had given their blessing, but Jack had been ecstatic; now they’d be actual brothers!
Colt planned to pop the question after the shower. He just hoped he could wait that long; he’d known since their first month together that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Jill.
Jill tilted her head, eyes suspicious as she saw his face. “What?”
“What?” he asked innocently.
“You looked deep in thought for a minute. What’s on that handsome mind of yours?”
“Oh, just about how lucky I am to be with you,” he said.
She grinned. “I like where this is going. Feel free to continue.”
“Jill Bennett, you make me want to be a better man,” he said theatrically as they reached their usual starting point. “And most certainly a better runner.”
Jill’s laughter echoed across the empty park. She tightened her ponytail and grinned at him, blue eyes sparkling in the sunlight. “Race ya.”
Colt kissed her one more time for luck. “You’re on.”
